Personal Life: Time, Regret, and Scooters in Madeira

Have you ever woken up from a dream that left you completely rattled? Not the kind where you forget your locker combination or show up to school with no pants. I’m talking about the ones that leave an emotional hangover. I had one this week that shook me.

In the dream, I thought I was turning 41. But when I did the math, I realized I was actually turning 45, and I was devastated. I cried because I couldn’t remember the other birthdays. It felt like I had lost time, like I had been too busy or too distracted to even notice that four whole years had slipped away.

Then I woke up. And I remembered I was born in 1984, not 1980. So, I wasn’t 45. I was still on track. But the feeling lingered.

It made me realize something important. I’m not afraid of aging. I’m afraid of wasting my life. I’m afraid of looking back and realizing I missed it because I was too busy doing laundry, checking emails, or thinking about what’s next instead of living in what’s now.

Maybe that’s why I love traveling so much, especially with my family. It forces me to be present. To watch the way my kids notice the world. To eat the food, see the views, and slow down enough to really experience something.

Right now, we’re in Sweden for my sister’s wedding. And after that, we’re heading to Madeira for a family honeymoon. Yes, all of us. Honeymoons are better with siblings, right?

We went to Madeira last year, but this time, I’m hoping to explore even more of the island, preferably by scooter. There's something about scooting along ocean cliffs and through little villages that feels like living instead of just vacationing.

Right before we left, a client of mine said something that landed deep: “Enjoy your family. That’s what I regretted most in 20 years of medical practice. I never had time. I was always at the hospital.” That might be where the dream came from. And honestly, it might be one of the most important reminders I’ve ever received.

Showings were strong, but the color was a conversation piece we’d rather avoid. Pro tip: In this market, it’s a beauty contest and a price war. If you're not the best-looking and best-priced, buyers will move on.
  
  

Speaking of buyers, activity picked up the weekend before the Fourth of July, which is common. People often make big decisions right before holiday travel. But don’t expect much movement this week. Historically, showings and offers drop during holiday weekends.

On the upside, serious buyers are still showing up, and properties are going under contract with fewer showings. That means the buyers who are out there are motivated. But if your home isn’t getting traction, it’s time to look hard at pricing and presentation. More than half the homes that went under contract last week had at least one price reduction. The market is talking.
